Program Goals
- Equip participants with basic outdoor skills necessary for camping, hiking, and overnight trips.

APASS Featured
Class 1: Team-building and Social Skills (2 hours)
- Objective: Build camaraderie and cooperation through group activities and exercises.
- Key Topics:
- Icebreakers and group dynamics
- Communication techniques for outdoor settings
- Leadership roles and effective collaboration in a team environment
- Problem-solving exercises to promote trust and teamwork
Class 2: Safety in the Outdoors & Introduction to Camping (2 hours)
- Objective: Teach essential safety practices and introduce participants to camping basics.
- Key Topics:
- General Outdoor Safety: Navigation, recognizing hazards (weather, terrain), and emergency preparedness.
- Camping Basics: Setting up camp (tents, cooking areas), understanding camping gear, fire safety, and Leave No Trace principles.
- Preparing for an outdoor adventure: packing tips, what to bring, and how to stay comfortable outdoors.
Class 3: Introduction to Overnight Backcountry Hiking & Bear Safety (2 hours)
- Objective: Equip participants with the knowledge and skills to safely embark on an overnight hiking trip, with a focus on wildlife awareness.
- Key Topics:
- Overnight Hiking Essentials: Planning for a backcountry trip, essential gear (backpacks, sleeping bags, and stoves), and how to prepare mentally and physically for an overnight hike.
- Bear Safety: Understanding bear behavior, proper food storage, signs of bear activity, and what to do if you encounter a bear. Discussing local wildlife and how to stay safe in their habitats.
- Leave No Trace in Backcountry Hiking: Focus on how to minimize environmental impact during a backcountry hike.
