Beyond the Trail: 10 APASS Students Take on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Adventurous Journey

This summer, ten APASS students stepped outside their comfort zones, embraced the challenges of the outdoors, and discovered that some of the most meaningful lessons happen far beyond the classroom.

During July and August 2026, ten students from APASS participated in the Adventurous Journey component of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), taking part in both a practice journey and their official camping expedition. Over the course of their preparation and outdoor adventures, students had the opportunity to develop practical outdoor skills, strengthen their teamwork, and build friendships through shared experiences.

While the journey came with its fair share of challenges, the students finished with something far more valuable than simply completing a camping trip: a stronger sense of confidence, independence, and accomplishment.

Preparing for the Adventure: Learning Before Hitting the Trail

A successful outdoor expedition takes more than enthusiasm. It requires preparation, communication, and the ability to work together when things do not go exactly as planned.

Before embarking on their official camping trip, students participated in a practice journey to familiarize themselves with the expectations of the Adventurous Journey. This preparatory experience gave them the opportunity to put their skills into practice, understand the demands of outdoor travel, and learn how to function as a team.

From preparing their equipment and organizing supplies to understanding the importance of navigation, campsite routines, and group responsibilities, students began to appreciate the many details involved in planning a safe and successful expedition.

The practice journey also provided a valuable opportunity to identify areas for improvement. Students could learn from their mistakes, adjust their approach, and become better prepared for the official journey ahead.

After all, preparation is not simply about making sure everything goes according to plan. It is about developing the confidence and adaptability to respond when it doesn’t.

The Official Camping Trip: Challenges That Became Learning Opportunities

With the practice journey behind them, the students were ready to take on their official camping expedition.

Life outdoors introduced a different rhythm from their usual school and home routines. Tasks that might seem simple in everyday life could require considerably more planning and cooperation in a camping environment. Managing equipment, coordinating responsibilities, navigating unfamiliar surroundings, and maintaining a positive attitude all became part of the experience.

Not every moment was easy. Physical fatigue, unexpected difficulties, and the demands of working as a group could test students’ patience and determination. Yet these challenges were also an important part of the learning process.

Rather than relying on familiar routines or immediate solutions, students had to communicate with one another, share responsibilities, and find practical ways to move forward together.

They learned that teamwork involves more than simply walking alongside one another. It means paying attention to the needs of others, offering help when someone is struggling, listening to different perspectives, and understanding that the success of the group depends on everyone’s contribution.

These experiences encouraged students to become more resourceful and resilient. They also offered a valuable reminder that personal growth often happens when we are willing to face unfamiliar situations instead of avoiding them.

More Than Camping: Skills for Life Beyond the Outdoors

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award encourages young people to challenge themselves, develop new interests, and become more independent. The Adventurous Journey is a particularly meaningful opportunity to put these qualities into practice.

Throughout their summer experience, our students had the chance to strengthen several important life skills.

1. Teamwork and communication

Working together in an outdoor environment requires clear communication and shared responsibility. Students learned to coordinate tasks, support their teammates, and contribute to common goals. They also discovered the importance of patience and cooperation when different people have different needs and approaches.

2. Independence and problem-solving

Away from their usual routines, students had more opportunities to make decisions, take responsibility for their belongings, and work through practical challenges. These experiences helped them recognize that they are capable of handling more than they might initially expect.

3. Resilience and adaptability

Outdoor adventures rarely unfold exactly as imagined. Learning to stay focused, adjust plans, and maintain a constructive attitude when faced with difficulties is an important part of building resilience. Every challenge became an opportunity to practice persistence and flexible thinking.

4. Practical outdoor skills

From preparing for an expedition to managing camping equipment and understanding group safety, students gained hands-on experience that cannot be fully replicated in a classroom. These practical skills helped them become more confident and better prepared for future outdoor activities.

5. Friendship and mutual support

Perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of the experience was the opportunity to build genuine connections. Sharing responsibilities, overcoming obstacles, and experiencing the outdoors together created opportunities for students to understand and appreciate one another in new ways.

The friendships formed along the trail were not simply a bonus. They were an important part of what made the journey memorable.

Growing Together, One Step at a Time

For young people, growth is not always measured by grades, certificates, or other formal achievements. Sometimes, it can be seen in the small moments: a student taking initiative without being asked, a teammate offering help when someone needs it, or a group finding a solution after an unexpected setback.

These moments may seem ordinary, but they reflect important changes in confidence, responsibility, and maturity.

By participating in both the practice journey and the official camping expedition, our ten students had the opportunity to experience the full process of preparing, learning, adapting, and accomplishing something together.

They learned that challenges are not necessarily signs that something has gone wrong. Often, they are an essential part of learning. A difficult moment can become an opportunity to develop patience; a problem can encourage creative thinking; and a shared struggle can bring people closer together.

Most importantly, students experienced the satisfaction that comes from working toward a goal and completing it as a team.

Celebrating a Summer of Growth and Achievement

As we look back on July and August 2026, we are proud of all ten students who took part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Adventurous Journey.

Their summer was about more than spending time outdoors or completing a camping expedition. It was about stepping beyond familiar boundaries, learning through experience, and discovering the value of supporting one another.

The skills they developed—from teamwork and communication to resilience and independence—will continue to serve them well in school, future activities, and everyday life.

And perhaps the most meaningful takeaway is this: students do not need every experience to be easy for it to be worthwhile. Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that ask us to work a little harder, help one another a little more, and discover strengths we did not know we had.

Ten students. Two journeys. Countless lessons and lasting memories.

This summer, our students did more than complete an adventure. They grew together, built friendships, and took another step toward becoming more confident, capable, and independent young people.

At APASS, we believe that meaningful learning extends beyond the classroom. Experiences like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award remind us that some of life’s most important lessons are learned by doing, by working together, and by having the courage to take the next step—even when the path ahead is challenging.

Here’s to the friendships formed, the skills gained, and the many adventures still to come!
